Mody Marak was the first president of the Garo National Conference (GNC) which would later lend support to the Statehood Movement. In the 1967 Assam Legislative Assembly he contested as a candidate from All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) and won from the Dainadubi Constituency.
